Firefox 4 doesn't save tabs (Firefox 5 - now)

PrintE-mail

firefox-logoQ. I've downloaded Firefox 4 and now I am no longer able to save my tabs. How can I fix that? (The same problem still exists in Firefox 5 through the latest Firefox version - it doesn't look like they are going to fix this)

A. By default this function has been disabled. To enable it, do the following:

1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"

2. In the filter field, type in browser.showQuitWarning. This should filter out all other options

3. Double click on the option that is left in the list. The value should switch from "false" to "true".

4. Close about:config tab and it should work

PS: I have no idea why they did that.

For Mac users

mac-300x189

It seems like its a different setting. Try the following:

1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"

2. In the filter field, type in browser.tabs.warnOnClose and set it to True

3. Next, in the filter field, type in browser.warnOnQuit and set it to True (this seems to work - we haven't tested ourselves)

4. Finally, in the filter field, type in browser.warnOnRestart and set it to True

If all of the above fails...

1. Start Firefox in Safe Mode. You can restart in Firefox Safe Mode via "Help Restart with Add-ons disabled...".

2. Once restarted, this window will pop-up:

SafeMode-Fx36

Check "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" and try the initial steps again.

Good luck.

Hello Kev. Here are the steps that worked for me:

1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"

2. In the filter field, type in browser.showQuitWarning. This should filter out all other options

3. Double click on the option that is left in the list. The value should switch from "false" to "true".

4. Close about:config tab and it should work. I know these are the already mentioned steps, but this is just in case you need them in order.

5. This step is crucial; like Tilly mentioned, NOW go to Tools -> Options -> General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Either of the others seems to be okay. Click OK.

Now when you attempt to close Firefox with more than one tab still open, you should get a warning message.

6. If it DIDN'T work, just go back to about:config and turn browser.showQuitWarning BACK to FALSE.

7. Go back to Tools -> Options -> General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Choose ANY of the other two options.

8. Then go back to about:config and turn browser.showQuitWarning BACK to TRUE. After doing this dance TWICE and verifying that the General option was changed, and turning showQuitWarning off and then on again, it Worked!

I then updated from Firefox v19 to v20.0.1 and it STILL works fine (remembered my last session BEFORE the update)! Hope that helps Kev and anyone else who did all the steps, and it STILL didn't work!

I love you for this. :) I was still running firefox 3 because I hated firefox 4 so much for this problem that I downgraded again. I finally decided to upgrade (version 12 now!) and was really annoyed that it was still just quitting and closing everything instantly when I hit cmd Q, which I really don't like it doing, especially when I hit it by mistake! I changed everything you mentioned on the about:config page, but it still wasn't working. (I'm using a mac...) A previous commenter was right in saying that in preferences, the "when firefox starts" option has to be set to something OTHER than "show windows and tabs from last time". Counter intuitive, but that's how it goes. I set mine to show my homepage, and I got my beloved warning back. :)

No Save&Quit option in Firedox 10

#106

Thanks Tilly. You gave me the solution.

I'd ensured that browser.showQuitWarning was set to true, but it wouldn't work.

As you said, you have to go to Tools-->Options and the General tab, and change the option 'When Firefox starts', so that it is NOT "Show my windows and tabs from last time". Any other option seems to work.

Taken me hours, until I found your post.

Thanks

Restore Tabs

Even if you haven't the selected the option "Show my windows and tabs from last time", and you have just unluckly closed Firefox..you can easily restore all your tabs, by doing:

History > Restore previous session

P.S.: And I agree, it's a pain in the *ss to not have this usefull "save tabs" feature easily available..
THANKS !

DON'T have "Show my windows and tabs from last time" if you want quit warning
106 Sunday, 22 January 2012 03:13
Tilly
I was getting fed up with not getting a warning about quitting if I had more than one tab open but I think I have it licked. Try this:

Set all the warning options to true.

NOW go to Tools - Options - General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Either of the others seems to be okay. Click OK.

Now when you attempt to close Firefox with more than one tab still open, you should get a warning message.

It beats me why it's now so difficult to set this USEFUL feature on and counter-intuitive - who'd have thought you have to have that setting disabled???
Thanks

This does not make a warning message appear when closing Firefox 6, but all tabs do get automatically saved and then in the next session reopened. Kind of strange how that value got changed from "true" to "false" on its own. Thanks for the fix!

Thank you for the tip. Firefox, what are you doing making so many unpopular changes to the normal function and layout? After years of doing things a certain way humans get stuck and repetition becomes second nature, you are breaking our known habits. I am glad Mozilla listened and put the close, etc. back on the right. I hate digging around the config to find little things like that.

@Josuemental: I'm not sure why it would revert back. Two reasons that I can think of:
1. your directory is read-only (or you don't have permissions to write there). When you add bookmarks, do they stay?

2. Your firefox install is corrupted. Try reinstalling it, but before you do, move/rename your profile. Your profiles should be in: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

I for the life of me can't understand why they turned this feature off. If you've got a dozen tabs open and say need to reboot for a Windows update, do you really want to lose all those half-read tabs? No!

What's worse is the default behaviour is now the same as when you close one Firefox window while another is open - it gives you the impression that there's a hidden Firefox window hiding somewhere, or that your Firefox installation is up the creek.

There's no logic in defaulting this setting to off. Firefox devs please revert this to the old behaviour!

that seems like not a good thing to remove as an easily available option! i guess since i was already using this option in the beta version my preferences remained the same when updating to firefox 4 proper, so i didn't have to set this but that's a bit of a pain! glad y'all figured it out!
Thanks

Thank you for such a simple solution! I wish the Mozilla support page would've told me to do this...instead, I spent half an hour renaming files, testing my addons and extensions, and basically wasting my time. This was much easier - thank you so much! :D
Thanx!!!

I went back and ensured that all three of the preferences you mentioned were set to "true" and Firefox still won't prompt me to save tabs. SO Annoying!!! Have any other Mac users had success with this? I'm not really sure why they had to eff with such a fundamental feature, but I can only tolerate this for about one more day before I downgrade to the old version.
Thanks

I'm a mac user and, although I changed the browser.showQuitWarning value to "True" Firefox still won't prompt me to save my open tabs. Anybody know how to get the prompt back on a mac?

I am normally on the same page everyday - or I read books online. The fact that Firefox saved my closed tabs and automatically opened then then next time I got on it saved me so much time! It was such a pain to try and find my page later (or favorite it and then having to delete it later)

I wonder why Firefox 4 disabled it? (I know that under History, there is a "Restore Previous Session" button - but I prefer it being automatic :) )

Thank you, anyways, for helping me solve this problem.
Nice

But ty author. It worked.

I'm still pissed tho. WHY remove this feature?? I live by tabs, I think most of us do since one of the most glaring cool parts of our browsing experiences is having multiple tabs open.

Whatever, I just do not get why in the F they would alter that.

jfc, did they have to fix something that wasn't broken? Now all this bloody bother just to revert back to something we already had--something very important and integral to the browser as well!

The hell you thinkin Mozilla. smh.
Thanks - browser.showQuitWarning

Virtualhelp.me. Thanks for putting the fix up!! Firefox:Why in the world did you change that to false? *Everyone* I know uses that function. I'm glad I found this page, but still.. Come on firefox developers.. Don't change settings that are default to most people. Some who can't figure out how to change their settings. (Others I often have to help because of changes like this)...
Thank you!!!

This works perfectly! Thank you so much! I use this feature extensively and it makes no sense why they would default it to "off".
Perfect!
