Firefox 4 doesn't save tabs (Firefox 5 - now)
Q. I've downloaded Firefox 4 and now I am no longer able to save my tabs. How can I fix that? (The same problem still exists in Firefox 5 through the latest Firefox version - it doesn't look like they are going to fix this)
A. By default this function has been disabled. To enable it, do the following:
1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"
2. In the filter field, type in browser.showQuitWarning. This should filter out all other options
3. Double click on the option that is left in the list. The value should switch from "false" to "true".
4. Close about:config tab and it should work
PS: I have no idea why they did that.
For Mac users
It seems like its a different setting. Try the following:
1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"
2. In the filter field, type in browser.tabs.warnOnClose and set it to True
3. Next, in the filter field, type in browser.warnOnQuit and set it to True (this seems to work - we haven't tested ourselves)
4. Finally, in the filter field, type in browser.warnOnRestart and set it to True
If all of the above fails...
1. Start Firefox in Safe Mode. You can restart in Firefox Safe Mode via "Help → Restart with Add-ons disabled...".
2. Once restarted, this window will pop-up:
Check "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" and try the initial steps again.
Good luck.
1. In the address line, type in "about:config" (without quotation marks). Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"
2. In the filter field, type in browser.showQuitWarning. This should filter out all other options
3. Double click on the option that is left in the list. The value should switch from "false" to "true".
4. Close about:config tab and it should work. I know these are the already mentioned steps, but this is just in case you need them in order.
5. This step is crucial; like Tilly mentioned, NOW go to Tools -> Options -> General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Either of the others seems to be okay. Click OK.
Now when you attempt to close Firefox with more than one tab still open, you should get a warning message.
6. If it DIDN'T work, just go back to about:config and turn browser.showQuitWarning BACK to FALSE.
7. Go back to Tools -> Options -> General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Choose ANY of the other two options.
8. Then go back to about:config and turn browser.showQuitWarning BACK to TRUE. After doing this dance TWICE and verifying that the General option was changed, and turning showQuitWarning off and then on again, it Worked!
I then updated from Firefox v19 to v20.0.1 and it STILL works fine (remembered my last session BEFORE the update)! Hope that helps Kev and anyone else who did all the steps, and it STILL didn't work!
You're a life saver!!!!!!!
Thx alot.
it was real helpful!
Thanks Tilly. You gave me the solution.
I'd ensured that browser.showQuitWarning was set to true, but it wouldn't work.
As you said, you have to go to Tools-->Options and the General tab, and change the option 'When Firefox starts', so that it is NOT "Show my windows and tabs from last time". Any other option seems to work.
Taken me hours, until I found your post.
Thanks
John
Any other suggestions? This really sucks...
You saved my day :D
It worked perfectly.
The option browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs to TRUE has the same effect that the old browser.showQuitWarning option, at least for me, in Firefox 10.
Good luck!
History > Restore previous session
P.S.: And I agree, it's a pain in the *ss to not have this usefull "save tabs" feature easily available..
Set all the warning options to true.
NOW go to Tools - Options - General tab and make sure "Show my windows and tabs from last time" is NOT your chosen option. Either of the others seems to be okay. Click OK.
Now when you attempt to close Firefox with more than one tab still open, you should get a warning message.
It beats me why it's now so difficult to set this USEFUL feature on and counter-intuitive - who'd have thought you have to have that setting disabled???
Tools>
Options>
General Tab>
Choose:
When Firefox opens: Show my windows and tabs from last time
:^)
Many thanks man!
Anyway, it definitely does not anymore. browser.showQuitWarning is set on true and it just quits, no saving procedure.
Sux
No More Quit and Save! Aghhh!
Followed for Mac User Instructions at beginning of this page!
cmdQ no luck!
goto History Menu>Restore Previous Session> Worked for me also with Multiple Pages/Tabs open and much quicker than with previous version!
I have no clue why it wasn't working earlier.
1. your directory is read-only (or you don't have permissions to write there). When you add bookmarks, do they stay?
2. Your firefox install is corrupted. Try reinstalling it, but before you do, move/rename your profile. Your profiles should be in: %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Best regards,
Bruno
What's worse is the default behaviour is now the same as when you close one Firefox window while another is open - it gives you the impression that there's a hidden Firefox window hiding somewhere, or that your Firefox installation is up the creek.
There's no logic in defaulting this setting to off. Firefox devs please revert this to the old behaviour!
I found your page by pure luck, followed your REALLY EASY instructions and Voila! Problem solved!
Thank you VERY MUCH!! Your help was just what I needed and now I am a happy web surfer/firefox browser closer again!!
Hugs and best wishes!

Thanks!
The only other problem I've had is Google toolbar not being supported anymore. I did find a fix which helped me though: https://www.itechmag.com/firefox-6-tips-enable-google-toolbar-in-firefox-6/
I lost 30 mins of my life looking for a solution. Firefox is clearly regressing from an update to another. The next time they piss me off this way I change my standard web browser. Completely idiotic...
Thank You
thanks, you're such an angel...
Thanks heaps
Should work after that.
What do I do?
Thanks!
Sad....neither worked for me. What went wrong? Please, please help - Tabs saves loads of time for me. Any Angel out there to help me ?
Thanks.
I wonder why Firefox 4 disabled it? (I know that under History, there is a "Restore Previous Session" button - but I prefer it being automatic :) )
Thank you, anyways, for helping me solve this problem.
I'm still pissed tho. WHY remove this feature?? I live by tabs, I think most of us do since one of the most glaring cool parts of our browsing experiences is having multiple tabs open.
Whatever, I just do not get why in the F they would alter that.

The hell you thinkin Mozilla. smh.
