I'm installing Debian instead of Ubuntu now, and I found that I had been giving Canonical way too much credit -- everything that I liked about Ubuntu is in Debian and it's more stable. I just googled this page as I reminder how to turn off Unity on an Ubuntu machine I'm still running. (It's making remote desktop really slow !)
