The tar.gz is just that - an archive. Most likely you'll have to untar it and compile it from sources and it probably won't create a link to the Gnome menu. If you are in Ubuntu, your best bet is to search for the application in Software Center (or whatever it is called) and install it from there. You can also try finding an already compiled .deb package. Good luck.
