Install Telnet Client
Q. I used to have Telnet client on Windows XP and I can't find it on Vista (or 2008 server). Where would I find it?
A. Telnet client is not installed by default on Windows Vista and Server 2008 Editions. There are 2 methods to install it:
Command Line
- Open a command prompt window. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
- Type:
pkgmgr /iu:"TelnetClient"
Note: if the User Account Control (UAC) dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
Graphical install on Windows ServerĀ 2008 Editions

Start Server Manager. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

If the User Account Control (UAC) dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

In the Features Summary section, click Add features.

In the Add Features Wizard, select Telnet Client, and then click Next.

On the Confirm Installation Options page, click Install.

When installation finishes, on the Installation Results page, click Close.
Graphical install on Windows Vista

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

On the Control Panel Home page, click Programs.

In the Programs and Features section, click Turn Windows features on or off.

If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.

In the Windows Features list, select Telnet Client, and then click OK.
