Text address line (Ubuntu 10.04)

Q. Where's the toggle button to change between text address line and button address line (in Ubuntu 10.04).

A. Yet another "feature" of Lucid/Gnome - developers decided to remove the toggle button. Here's what I'm talking about:

new_nautilus

This icon is missing: toggle_icon

Copy autocomplete / nicknames in Outlook

Q. I've just upgraded my computer and now my "Autocomplete" is not working when I'm typing my emails. How do I fix this?

outlook_autocomplete

A. Assuming you still have your old computer, you can copy it.

Its always a good idea to add people to your address book as well. So that when your account is moved (whether on Exchange or just the PST file), it has all those email addresses. Also, the autocomplete function is pretty random and has the tendency to add people you don't actually want to the list.

Default gateway keeps disappearing

Q. I've just install CentOS version 5.x and my system keeps losing the default gateway on reboots and network restarts.

A. It seems like a bug and has been reported on trixbox as well. A quick way to fix it is to run system-config-network and configure all the parameters. Even if you have the proper settings, make sure you hit the Save button. The gateway should stay there after reboot/network restart.

If that doesn't work, add something like this in you /etc/rc.local script:

route add default gw 192.168.1.1

Replace 192.168.1.1 with whatever your gateway is.

Volume Control/Icon is gone (Ubuntu 10.04)

Q. After installing Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), my volume control is missing. How can I get it back?

A. 1. Right-click on the panel where you'd like the volume controller to appear and select "Add to panel"
2. Choose "Indicator Applet" from the list and click on "Add" and you're done. The volume control should be back.

Convert FAT32 to NTFS

Converting to NTFS is quite easy. For the sake of this example, lets use Windows XP. It comes with a command line tool, called "convert.exe". To run it, go to: Start All Programs Accessories Command Prompt (or, from a Run box, type cmd).

In the command line, select the drive that you'd like to convert (assuming disk F):

Installing DHCP Server on Linux

Q. I would like to install a DHCP server.

1. Should I pick Windows or Linux

2. What are the install steps?

A. To answer 1st question - its up to you. There's no clear advantage to using one or the other. If you are running a router on Linux - then you should probably install Linux-based. If you have an Exchange or file-server running on Windows or you're just more comfortable with a gui based interface - then Windows is the way to go. This article will cover Linux install of the DHCP server (Windows will be covered some other time).

PDF Editor for Linux

Q. I would like to have a PDF editor for Linux. Are there any options?

A. That hand has a lot of low cards in it, but you may be able to find something to do basic editing.

PDFEdit

On top of the list we have PDFEdit, which is free and open source. Its not Acrobat Professional, but it does what most people need - rotate pages, combine several PDFs, add comments, etc.
